This lantern was made as a part of Penn's Intro to Mechanical Design class during fall of 2023. It is made from MDF wood, precisely laser cut to allow for a hardware-free press fit assembly. Inside is a simple circuit that is complete when the face is right-side up, illuminating the lantern, and incomplete when it is upside down, which turns the light off. It's a super simplistic design, but one of my personal favorites, as it was one of my first more loosely-defined mechanical project. It served as my introduction to Penn's Rapid Prototyping Lab (RPL), where I laser cut the wood, and opened my eyes to what's possible to create with Penn's facilities! Also, the face has an awesome raster-etched mustache, which always gives me a laugh.
