This is a personal project to restore my wood-splitting axe. It's a project I'm currently working on, to spruce up an axe that's in pretty bad shape but very important to me. I plan on hand-sanding the metal sections down, getting the rust off and smoothing out any knicks. Next I plan on polishing it to a mirror-like finish, similar to my engine pieces. Finally I'm going to put a real edge on it with some whetstones! It will all be done by hand with my the skills I learned polishing my engine.
A little background: my parents got the axe for me for my 12th birthday because I read the book "Hatchet" and was overcome with a desperate need to own my own axe in case of emergency, such as a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness or a zombie apocalypse. In all seriousness, it was one of my favorite gifts I've ever received, and it had a big role in sparking my love for the outdoors!
Pictures below are the current stages of its restoration.
